A shepherd was killed today in a blast near an Army firing range in Awantipora area of Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Ashiq Hussain Chopan (25) was grazing his livestock when he came into contact with some object that exploded and injured him severely in Jawbara, near the firing range of the Army's Victor Force, a police official said. He said Chopan was rushed to the nearest sub-district hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.

Afghan security forces recaptured a district headquarters in western Farah province today, just hours after the Taliban overrun the police and administrative offices, killing eight policemen, a spokesman said. The development came as insurgent attacks against security forces have stepped up across Afghanistan, including in Farah province. In today's assault, the Taliban launched a multi-pronged attack and stormed the district headquarters in Anardara, which they were able to hold on to for a few hours before Afghan reinforcements arrived. Nasrat Rahimi, deputy spokesman for the Interior Ministry, says that along with the eight killed in the assault, 10 security forces were wounded in the morning attack. "Right now the district headquarters and the area around it are under control of the Afghan security forces," Rahimi said, adding that "fighting is ongoing in three different parts of the district" as Afghan forces pursue the Taliban. The official, who was on his way from Kulgam to his branch of Jammu and Kashmir Bank at Kapran carrying Rs 6 lakh cash in his personal vehicle, was allegedly intercepted by a group a four gunmen, a police official said. He said three militants were killed in the pre-dawn encounter with security forces.
