Knife attacker shot dead outside Iran ambassador's Vienna residence: police

A 26-year-old Austrian was shot dead outside the Iranian ambassador's residence in Vienna today after he attacked a guard with a knife, police said. The assailant "died on the spot" after the guard opened fire, police spokesman Harald Soeros told AFP, adding that the attack took place just before midnight local time in a residential area. The motive for the attack is not yet known, police said. The guard, who was in a sentry box outside the building, suffered a wound to his upper arm in the attack. "He initially used pepper spray" against the assailant, Soeros said, before opening fire. According to early indications the guard "acted within the rules", said a spokesman from the ministry of defence, who said the attacker lived in Vienna but originated from the Tyrol region of Austria. Police have ordered reinforcements around all diplomatic missions in the city.

Three militants killed in encounter in J-K's Anantnag

Three unidentified militants were today killed in an encounter with security forces in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, the Army said. An anti-militancy operation was launched in Hakura area of Anantnag district late last night following information about the presence of militants in the area, an Army official said. He said three militants were killed in the pre-dawn encounter with security forces. The identity and group affiliation of the slain militants was not immediately known.

Jobs for kin of security personnel who died on duty: Rawat

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Sungh Rawat today announced that family members of personnel of armed and paramilitary forces, who lost their lives on duty, would be given jobs by the state government. The state government was committed to the welfare of soldiers and their family members, Rawat said at a gathering on the occasion of the foundation day of the Ex-Servicemen Welfare Association here. He said dependents of personnel of armed and paramilitary forces, who lost their lives on duty, would be given jobs by his government according to their qualification and eligibility. He said 670 Nyay Panchayats in Uttarakhand would be developed as growth centres, where dedicated people would be required and ex-servicemen could play an important role there.

Army personnel shot at in Patna, five policemen suspended

Unidentified gunmen today shot at an Army personnel when he tried to resist them from looting his belongings at Chirayatand overbridge here, police said. The incident occurred in the early hours when the Army personnel, a resident of Rohtas district, was returning home from a marriage function. The attackers, four to five in number, surrounded him and tried to loot his belongings, and one of them fired at him when he resisted, Deputy Inspector General of Central Range (Patna) Rajesh Kumar said. The man received a bullet injury in the neck and is stated to be in critical condition, the police officer said. The injured person was initially admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), from where his relatives shifted him to a private hospital. The SHO of Gandhi Maidan police station, Mitesh Kumar, has been suspended since the incident took place under the jurisdiction of his police station, the DIG said. The DIG also said that he has suspended four other policemen .

Russian authorities say 'terrorists' killed in foiled attack

Russian security services (FSB) today said they killed "terrorists" who were planning an attack near the city of Saratov in southwest Russia. The incident came a week before Russia's presidential election on March 18 and three months before the country hosts the 2018 World Cup. "Following an investigation and searches in the region of Saratov, the FSB foiled a planned terrorist attack by members of a secret terrorist cell," the FSB said in a statement. "There was an exchange of gunfire between the security forces and the criminals during which they were fatally wounded," it added, without specifying the number of people killed. In a video released by the FSB, the bodies apparently of two men are seen near a car with its windows shattered on a snowy road. The security services also said they recovered pistols, homemade grenades and an explosive device with three kilos of TNT in Saratov, about 800 kilometers (500 miles) from Moscow. Ready for talks: CM to agitating farmers

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tonight said his government will talk to the farmers who have undertaken a 'Long March' to the city to press their various demands. He also appealed agitators not to hold up the traffic tomorrow so that students appearing for Std 10th exams in the city are not delayed. Over 35,000 farmers have arrived in Mumbai after a six-day-long march from Nashik and are planning to lay siege to the state legislature complex here tomorrow. After BSF, CRPF jawan cautioned for using disrespectful words for Prez

After a recent incident of a BSF jawan being punished for using disrespectful words for the PM, a CRPF jawan has been "cautioned" by his commanding officer for dishonouring the President, apparently referring to him being the supreme commander of the armed forces. Militants attack CRFP post in Kulgam, no casualties reported

Suspected militants reportedly hurled a grenade on a CRPF guard post in south Kashmir's Kulgam district this evening, but there was no damage, police said. "Apparently militants hurled a grenade on a guard post of 18 bn (battalion) CRPF (at Damhaal Hanjipora) in Kulgam," Kashmir Zone Police said on its official Twitter page. 1 killed in clash between two groups in Bhangar

A 38-year-old man was killed today when two groups clashed at Bamonghata in South 24 Parganas district, police said. The man received a head injury after he was struck with an iron rod, the police said. He was taken to a local hospital where he was declared brought dead, a police officer said. The clash took place over filling up a piece of shallow land, the officer said. Both groups are reportedly affiliated to the same political party, he said. Telangana armed struggle fighter Kamalamma passes away

Telangana armed struggle fighter and veteran Communist leader Ch Kamalamma (90) died at a private hospital here in the early hours of today. A native of Warangal district of Telangana, Kamalamma, also a freedom fighter was suffering from age-related problems for the past over one month and was recently shifted to a hospital here for treatment. "Ch Kamalamma(90) passed away at 2.30 am today. Her body was brought to CPI State Office-- Makhdoom Bhavan and kept for some time. CPI and Left partyleaders and sympathisers paid homage to her and condoled her death," a release from the Telangana CPI said. The last rites were held at Pochamma Maidan in Warangal, it said. She joined the post Independence armed struggle to fight the rule of erstwhile Nizams of Hyderabad and their army of Razakars as part of Telangana Liberation Struggle by Communist Party of India at the age of 15. Later Kamalamma served as secretary of the CPI Mahila Samakhya for a long period.

Rly told to increase speed of trains carrying troops to border areas

The Railways has been asked to give high priority to the Army's infrastructure requirements and increase the speed of exclusive trains carrying critical weapons and troops in order to facilitate faster mobilisation to areas bordering China and Pakistan, official sources said. They said the Railways has already started work on the specific requirements of the armed forces and even decided to give access of its online train monitoring system to the Army so that it can track the movement of special trains taking weapons and troops to various locations on a real time basis. The sources said the Railways has also agreed to a proposal of the Army headquarters to create dedicated facilities in several key stations in the northeast for rapid movement of weapons to various sectors along the the Sino-India border in Arunachal Pradesh. 22 insurgents killed in Afghanistan

At least 22 insurgents have been killed in ground and air operations conducted by the Afghan forces across the country.Tolo News quoted Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Sunday as saying that the operations against the insurgents were carried out in the vicinity of Basram in Mihtarlam, Laghman's province capital, Kama, Nazyan districts of Nangarhar province, Nahar Saraj, Nad Ali and Washir districts of Helmand province.During the operations, several vehicles, weapons, ammunition and bases belonging to the insurgents were also destroyed.Yesterday, 16 insurgent were killed in two separate army operations carried out in Helmand province.No insurgent has commented on the incident, so far.
