Sitharaman to take up matter of Sri Lankan fishery act with MEA

Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday assured to take up the matter of Sri Lanka amending the fisheries act with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)."I will take this up with external affairs ministry and get back to you," she said while addressing the media here.Recent reports said that Sri Lanka was amending the fisheries act, which will impose a hefty fine on foreign boats that illegally or by mistake enter its waters.

Republic Day: 14 SSB officials awarded President's medal

Fourteen officials of the border guarding force Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) were decorated with the President's police medals for meritorious and distinguished service on Republic Day. Those awarded included Assistant Director K M Cariappa, the senior most publicity officer of the force. The officer, who joined the SSB in 1989, was decorated with the distinguished medal for rendering exceptionalservices in the field of publicity and perception and border management. The officer, at present, is chronicling the history of the paramilitary force that is tasked to guard Indian borders with Nepal and Bhutan. The SSB is about 80,000 personnel strong and works under the command of the Union Home Ministry.

Five pistols, fake notes seized

Five pistols and fake Indian currency notes with a total face value of around Rs four lakh were today seized and two persons arrested in this connection. A police official said some bullets were also recovered from the duo here. The notes were mainly in the denomination of Rs 2000. The two were suspected to have secured the weapons and the fake currency from some other state, police said but did not elaborate.

69th Republic Day celebrated in West Bengal

The 69th Republic Day was celebrated with pomp and gaiety across West Bengal amidst tight security today. A hovering military helicopter showered rose petals from over the venue of official programme here to greet the dignitaries including Governor K N Tripahi and other dignitaries. Extending his greetings to the people of the state on the occasion, Tripahi said everybody should resolve to secure the dreams of founding fathers of the nation. "We must renew our pledge for unity and national integrity of our nation on this very special occasion," he said after hoisting the Tricolour at Red Road in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Sikkim Governor pays homage to freedom fighters

India gifts ambulances, educational materials to Nepal

Kathmandu [Nepal], Jan 26 (ANI): On the occasion of the 69th Republic Day, the Indian Mission in Nepal on Friday handed over 30 ambulances and six buses to various hospitals and non-profit charity organisations.The ceremony was held at the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, which also witnessed the handing over of book grants to 41 educational institutions across Nepal.Students of various schools performed at the event and Nepal Army's band also performed during the hosting of the flag by Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri.Like every year, this Republic Day celebration witnessed the felicitation of seven widows, four next of kins of deceased soldiers and one disabled soldier of Indian Armed forces with dues worth NPR. 4.14 Crore and blankets to each.On 15th August of 2017, the Indian Mission in Nepal gifted 30 ambulances and six buses to various hospitals, organisations and non-profitable organisations as assistance to Nepali medical and education sectors.

Suspected suicide bomber detained in Srinagar

A woman was detained by the Jammu and Kashmir police on Friday on suspicious grounds of being a suicide bomber in Srinagar.The Jammu and Kashmir Police said they will verify the fact before coming to any conclusion.Speaking to media here, Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Muneer Khan said, "We had received an input that there is a lady who has come to the valley and is a suicide bomber. Yesterday, we were able to apprehend the suspect and now we will be talking to her. We will be talking to our sister agencies and every other lead to know about the issue. After proper investigations, we will come to the conclusion".He added that militant outfits especially, Lashkar, Jaish and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) are trying to lure the youth to militancy."We are trying to educate the youth. My appeal to the youth who have gone to militancy is to please come back as there will be no apprehensions and surrender," Khan stated.

ICC delegation to visit Nepal for progress discussions
