Cold conditions prevailed in Punjab and Haryana today with most parts of the region engulfed under fog. The minimum temperatures in most parts of Punjab and Haryana hovered between four to one degree celisus above normal, the MeT office said here. Hisar was the coldest place in Punjab and Haryana with a low of 7.4 degrees celsius, 0.5 notches below normal, the local MeT office said. The minimum temperatures in Bhiwani, Rohtak, Karnal, Amritsar, Ambala, Patiala, Sirsa and Pathankot recorded a low of 7.8, 7.9, 8.2, 8.4, 8.8, 9, 9.2 and 10.1 degrees Celsius respectively. Chandigarh, the common capital of both the states, recorded a low of 9.8 degrees celsius, three notches above normal. The MeT has forecast cloudy sky during the next 48 hours.
Residents of Kashmir got a big relief from the intense cold wave condition as minimum night temperatures increased by as much as six degrees at some places in the Valley owing to overnight rainfall. A layer of shallow fog engulfed the national capital this morning resulting in delay of 54 north-bound rail services and rescheduling 12 others. The minimum temperature was recorded at 9.4 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year, the MeT office said. "Fifty-four north-bound trains were running behind scheduled while departure of 12 trains were rescheduled keeping in mind the bad weather conditions," a senior railway official said. The poor visibility due to fog also affected the air traffic. Mercury dropped to 3.5 degree Celsius in Churu, which remained the coldest place in Rajasthan last night, the meterological department said today. Pilani, Dabok, Bikaner and Sriganganagar recorded minimum temperatures of 6.1, 7, 7.3 and 8 degree Celsius, while the night temperature in Ajmer, Jaipur, Barmer and Kota was 9.5, 10.3, 11.9 and 12.6 degrees respectively, according to a Met report. The night temperature is likely to increase by a few degrees during the next 24 hours, the department said.
