Jammu woke up to a chilly morning as the night temperature settled at 5.1 degrees Celsius, the lowest this season, the meteorological department said today. The night temperature recorded in the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir was four notches below normal, it added. The city had recorded a high of 18.1 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal, and a low of 5.7 degrees Celsius yesterday. The high-altitude areas of Jammu had experienced a heavy snowfall between December 11 and December 14, while the city was lashed by incessant rains. This had led to a marked drop in the mercury, the MeT department said. However, barring Jammu city, the other stations in the region marked a slight improvement in the night temperature as Katra, the base camp for Vaishno Devi pilgrims, registered a low of 6 degrees Celsius as against the previous night's 5.7 degrees Celsius. Mercury dropped to 1.8 degrees Celsius in Churu, which remained the coldest place in Rajasthan last night, the meteorological department said today. Pilani and Sriganganagar recorded minimum temperatures of of 2.4 and 3.9 degrees Celsius respectively, while the night temperature at Bikaner, Sikar, Vanasthali, Barmer, Jodhpur, Jaipur and Kota was 5.2, 5.5, 7.6, 9.1, 9.8, 10.7 and 12.2 degrees Celsius respectively, according to a MeT report. A dense to very dense fog was also witnessed at a few places in the northern parts of the desert state, which affected vehicular traffic, the report said.

The minimum temperature dropped by 1 to 4 degrees Celsius at most places in Rajasthan due to a change in the pattern of cold winds from Jammu and Kashmir, a MeT official said today. According to the MeT department, cold weather conditions prevailed in Jaipur and adjoining areas due to north-easterly winds. Sriganganagar was the coldest place in the state at 3.3 degrees Celsius. The hill station of Mount Abu had a low of 3.4, Sikar 4.5, Churu 4.7, Pilani 4.8, Alwar 5.2, Jaisalmer 6.3, Banasthali 8, Bikaner 8.4, Eranpura Road 9, Barmer 9.4, Ajmer 9.5, Chittorgarh 9.7, Jaipur 9.8, Bundi 10.4, Jodhpur 10.7, Swai Madhopur 11, Udaipur 11.1 and Kota 13 degrees Celsius.
