Another spell of snow on Sunday forced the local authorities here to close Jammu Srinagar National Highway for vehicular movement. The region at present is under the grip of Chillai-Kalan, a 40-day long period of harsh winter. Delhi's air quality was recorded in the 'severe' category Sunday due to a reduced wind speed even as authorities have forecast rainfall in the next couple of days which they said might lower the pollution level. According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, the overall air quality index (AQI) in the city was 416, which falls in the 'severe' category. An AQI between 100 and 200 comes under the 'moderate' category, 201 and 300 is considered 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', while that between 401 and 500 is 'severe'. As many as 24 areas recorded 'severe' air quality and seven 'very poor' air quality, the CPCB said. In the National Capital Region (NCR), Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Noida and Greater Noida recorded 'severe' air quality, it said. The overall PM2.5 level -- fine particulate matters in the air with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers -- in Delhi was at 273, while the PM10 level was at 426, it said. Intermittent light snowfall continued in most parts of Kashmir Saturday night, but clouds made way for the sun Sunday morning even as the MET office has forecast mainly dry weather for the week ahead. "There was intermittent light snowfall at most places in Kashmir Saturday night, but the valley experienced a sunny morning today (Sunday)," an official of the MET office here said. He said the weather would improve from Sunday and would stay mainly dry for the week ahead. Owing to the cloud cover, the minimum temperature at Srinagar rose slightly Saturday night and settled at minus 0.4 degree Celsius compared to the previous night's low of minus 0.8 degree Celsius, the official said. Cold wave conditions intensified across Himachal Pradesh Sunday with the capital city and many areas of upper and lower hills in the state receiving fresh bouts of snow, the Meteorological Department said. The plains and low hills of the state experienced rainfall, it added. Overcast skies prevailed in the national capital on Saturday with the minimum temperature settling at 7.1 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year. The maximum temperature was recorded at 22.9 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average, said a MeT Department official. The humidity oscillated between 100 and 57 per cent. The MeT office has forecast cloudy skies along with the likelihood of light rain and thundershowers in the forenoon on Sunday. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 21 and 9 degrees Celsius respectively," the weatherman said. The maximum temperature on Friday was 22.3 degrees Celsius whereas the minimum had settled at 4.8 degrees Celsius.
Fresh snowfall across the Kashmir Valley on Saturday disrupted air traffic at the Srinagar airport while the Srinagar-Jammu highway was closed for vehicular movement.

The hills of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday saw a slight rise in the mercury owing to dry weather but the Met Office has forecast chances of snowfall and rain in the coming days.
