The overall air quality index (AQI) deteriorated to 'very poor' category here on Monday as a thick blanket of fog descended over the national capital.Delhi's AQI was docking at 386 in the morning, according to System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR).As per India Meteorological Department (MeT), the minimum temperature in Delhi will be 7 degree Celsius while maximum temperature is expected to hover around 20 degree Celsius.The wind speed in Delhi will be 9 km/hr and the humidity will oscillate between 70 per cent and 77 per cent.Fog lowered visibility in the national capital and surrounding areas, due to which as many as 12 trains are running late.Inadequate nutrition and exposure to cold wave have forced the homeless in Delhi to seek refuge in night shelters.While the national capital region is reeling under the intense cold wave, fresh snowfall was witnessed in parts of Jammu and Kashmir.Snow clearing operations are currently underway in Rajouri district.
Himachal Pradesh's famed tourist place Manali in Kullu district witnessed a fresh spell of snow, taking the temperature to minus five degrees Celsius, the meteorological department said. The tourist place witnessed 2 cm more snowfall from 5.30 pm on Sunday till 8.30 am on Monday, Shimla MeT centre director Manmohan Singh said. Other tourist destinations of the hill state like Kufri in Shimla district and Dalhousie in Chamba district also saw acute cold wave conditions at freezing point. The minimum temperature at Kufri and Dalhousie remained minus 2.9 and 0 degree Celsius, respectively, he said. Tribal district Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 12 degrees Celsius, the official said, adding the minimum temperature in another tribal district Kinnaur's Kalpa was minus 8.2 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in state capital Shimla and Palampur was 1 degree Celsius each, Singh added.

According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, the overall air quality index (AQI) in the city was 416, which falls in the 'severe' category. An AQI between 100 and 200 comes under the 'moderate' category, 201 and 300 is considered 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', while that between 401 and 500 is 'severe'. As many as 24 areas recorded 'severe' air quality and seven 'very poor' air quality, the CPCB said. In the National Capital Region (NCR), Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Noida and Greater Noida recorded 'severe' air quality, it said. The overall PM2.5 level -- fine particulate matters in the air with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers -- in Delhi was at 273, while the PM10 level was at 426, it said. Intermittent light snowfall continued in most parts of Kashmir Saturday night, but clouds made way for the sun Sunday morning even as the MET office has forecast mainly dry weather for the week ahead. "There was intermittent light snowfall at most places in Kashmir Saturday night, but the valley experienced a sunny morning today (Sunday)," an official of the MET office here said. He said the weather would improve from Sunday and would stay mainly dry for the week ahead. Cold wave conditions intensified across Himachal Pradesh Sunday with the capital city and many areas of upper and lower hills in the state receiving fresh bouts of snow, the Meteorological Department said. The plains and low hills of the state experienced rainfall, it added. Overcast skies prevailed in the national capital on Saturday with the minimum temperature settling at 7.1 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year. The maximum temperature was recorded at 22.9 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average, said a MeT Department official. The humidity oscillated between 100 and 57 per cent. The MeT office has forecast cloudy skies along with the likelihood of light rain and thundershowers in the forenoon on Sunday. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 21 and 9 degrees Celsius respectively," the weatherman said. The maximum temperature on Friday was 22.3 degrees Celsius whereas the minimum had settled at 4.8 degrees Celsius.
Fresh snowfall across the Kashmir Valley on Saturday disrupted air traffic at the Srinagar airport while the Srinagar-Jammu highway was closed for vehicular movement.

The hills of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday saw a slight rise in the mercury owing to dry weather but the Met Office has forecast chances of snowfall and rain in the coming days.

Visibility dropped to 300 metres at Safadarjung and 400 metres at Palam due to fog, around 7.30 AM, said a MeT department official. Relative humidity was 100 per cent at 8.30 AM. According to forecast of the department, the day will turn from partly cloudy to generally cloudy by the evening and there is possibility of "very light" rain by the night. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 22 degrees Celsius. A railways official said 11 Delhi-bound trains were running late by 2-3 hours on average, due to fog. The maximum temperature on Friday was 22.3 degrees Celsius, whereas the minimum was 4.8 degrees Celsius.
