Mercury dipped below 10 degree Celsius in 19 places in Odisha
Biting cold persisted across Odisha with the mercury dipping below 10 degree Celsius in at least 19 places on Wednesday. Intense cold conditions are likely to grip the state for at least next four days under the influence of dry and cold wind blowing from northern Himalayan range, the Meteorological Centre here said. Phulbani became the coldest place in the state recording 4.5 degree Celsius, while the mercury stood at 5 degree Celsius in the tourist destination of Daringibadi, also in Kandhamal district, it said. As the entire state reeled under biting cold, the mercury slipped below 8 degrees Celsius in at least 8 places and below 10 degrees Celsius in at least 19 locations in the state, it said. The mercury stood at 6.6 degrees Celsius in Sonepur, while it was 7.5 degree in Bhawanipatna, 7.6 degree in Angul, 8 degrees in Titlagarh, Sundargarh and Keonjhar, 8.2 degree in Koraput, 8.4 degree in Sambalpur, 9.3 degree in Talcher and Balasore, 9.4 degree in Baripada, 9.5 .
Telangana still chilly; blankets distributed to the homeless
: Several parts of Telangana, including Hyderabad, continued to experience cold conditions with the lowest minimum temperature of six degrees Celsius recorded in districts of Adilabad and Medak, officials said Wednesday. Severe cold wave conditions prevailed in isolated places in the districts of Peddapalle, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its daily weather report of Telangana. At 8.30 am, Ramagundam and Hyderabad reported minimum temperatures of 9 and 10 degrees Celsius respectively in the past 24 hours, the report said. Normal life has been thrown out of gear at some places in the state for the past several days owing to the cold conditions. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) decided to distribute blankets to the homeless who sleep on the pavements. The Corporation Commissioner M Dana Kishore said about 700 people were taking shelter in about 15 night shelters already set up here. He asked the civic body officials to provide shelter .
High reaches in HP get fresh snow; state ready to meet any weather eventuality: Authorities
Following the IMD's 'orange warning' of heavy snowfall and rain in Himachal Pradesh from January 4 to 6, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) Wednesday said it is fully ready to deal with any eventuality. Talking to PTI, Special Secretary, Disaster Management, D C Rana said the state and district control rooms have been put on a state of readiness to deal with any eventuality in view of the weather advisory. Tourists and general public have been advised to avoid the higher reaches in the coming days to avoid any untoward incident, he added. Dip in min temperatures brings relief to people in Punjab, Hry
Minimum temperatures across Punjab and Haryana registered a slight increase on Wednesday, bringing some relief to people from cold wave conditions. For nearly three weeks, the minimum temperatures had been hovering below the normal limits and settling between 1 and 6 degrees Celsius, with Adampur registering sub-zero temperatures on two occasions. But, on Wednesday temperatures at several places in the two states was between 7 to 9 degrees Celsius. Kashmir witnesses first snowfall of '19, Jammu-Srinagar highway closed
Kashmir received its first snowfall of the New Year on Wednesday, breaking a month-long dry spell in the Valley, the meteorological department said. The 300-kilometre-long Jammu-Srinagar national highway and the Mughal Road, which connects Jammu's Poonch and Rajouri districts with south Kashmir's Shopian, have been closed for vehicular traffic after the fresh snowfall, officials said. "There was snowfall at most places in Kashmir, particularly in Gulmarg and Pahalgam tourist resorts, traces of snowfall was also witnessed in Srinagar early in the morning" an official said. Jawahar tunnel and other areas are still having snowfall. As a precautionary measure all Kashmir-bound vehicles have been stopped at Nagrota and Udhampur, the officials said. 2019 expected to be warmer: Officials
The year 2018 may have ended on a chilly note, but 2019 is expected to be warmer, senior officials said, citing El Nino and the overall trend of rise in temperatures. According to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), the chance of a full-fledged El Nino being established between December 2018-February 2019 is estimated to be about 75-80 per cent. El Nino is a phenomenon associated with the warming of the Pacific waters and it is largely believed to have an impact on the subcontinent's weather. The weather community is divided over the extent of its impact on the monsoon. Kashmir received its first snowfall of the New Year on Wednesday, breaking a month-long dry spell in the Valley, the meteorological department said. The snowfall has brought major respite to the residents of Kashmir as the minimum temperature rose by several degrees, except in Gulmarg. Srinagar recorded a 0 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night -- an increase of over four degrees from minus 4.2 degrees Celsius on the previous night, the Met department said. "There was snowfall at most places in Kashmir, particularly in Gulmarg and Pahalgam tourist resorts, traces of snowfall was also witnessed in Srinagar early in the morning" an official said. Gulmarg received snowfall equivalent to 8.8 mm of rains till 8.30 am, while Kupwara recorded 7.4 mm precipitation. Night temperature increases in several parts of Rajasthan
There was some respite for people in Rajasthan from intense cold as night temperatures increased by a few degrees, an official at the MeT Department said Wednesday. The night temperature in Bhilwara settled at 3.9 degrees Celsius followed by 4.4 degrees Celsius in Mount Abu. Alwar, Churu and Chittorgarh recorded a minimum temperature of 5.4 degrees Celsius each, the official said. Dabok, Sikar, Pilani, Jaipur, Kota and Barmer recorded minimum temperatures of 6, 6.5, 7.1, 7.9, 8.8 and 11 degrees Celsius, respectively. Delhi: 12 trains delayed due to fog, air quality in 'severe' category
Dense fog on Wednesday blanketed the national capital and affected railway operations here, with around 12 trains being affected due to low visibility conditions.The list of the delayed trains included Puri-New Delhi Purushottam Express, Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Express, Bhagalpur-Anand Vihar Garib Rath Express, Varanasi-New Delhi Kashi Vishwanath Express and New Jalpaiguri-New Delhi Express. Delhi records third lowest min temp in last 50 years
Delhi recorded an average minimum temperature of 6.7 degrees Celsius in December 2018, the third lowest in the last 50 years, the India Meteorological Department said Tuesday. According to the IMD, the fog coverage data at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Palam showed it was the clearest month in the last 22 years in terms of visibility. "During the month of December 2018, Delhi recorded the average minimum temperature of 6.7 degrees Celsius, which was the third lowest during the last 50 years after 2005 and 1996, when the monthly minimum temperature was 6 degrees and 5.9 degrees respectively," the IMD said. The daily minimum temperature was below normal on 26 days. The monthly mean temperature was below normal by 1.6 degrees Celsius. The weatherman has ruled out respite from chilly conditions in the next few days. IMD issues alert for heavy rain, snowfall in HP on weekend
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rain and snowfall in most parts of Himachal Pradesh on Friday and Saturday. Heavy rain and snowfall are likely to occur in most places of high, middle, low hills and plains on Friday and Saturday due to western disturbances, said Manmohan Singh, director, Meteorological Centre, Shimla. Issuing an 'orange warning' of heavy rain and snowfall in most parts of the state on Friday and Saturday, the Met director asked the authorities concerned to be prepared as heavy rain and snowfall may lead to blockage of roads and landslides, especially in regions of high and mid hills. The Kangra administration has asked its officials to take all possible precautionary measures following the advisory, a district official said. The lowest temperature was recorded in Keylong, the administrative centre Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre at minus 6.8 degrees Celsius.
Cold wave conditions continue in Punjab, Haryana
Cold wave conditions sweeping most parts of Punjab and Haryana continued unabated, with Bathinda becoming the coldest place in the two states on Tuesday, an official at the MeT Department said. Bathinda in Punjab reeled at a low of 0.7 degrees Celsius, followed by 1.6 degrees Celsius in Adampur, 2.3 degrees Celsius in Halwara, 2.4 degrees Celsius in Amritsar, 4.4 degrees Celsius in Ludhiana and 5 degrees Celsius at Patiala, he said. In Haryana, Hisar's minimum temperature settled at 2.8 degrees Celsius, Ambala 3.7 degrees Celsius, Karnal 3.4 degrees Celsius and 5.6 and 4.9 degrees Celsius in Bhiwani and Sirsa, respectively, the weatherman said. Union Territory Chandigarh too continued to be under the grip of intense cold conditions, with the minimum temperature settling at 4.2 degrees Celsius. Slight respite from cold wave condition for Delhiites on New Year's Day
On New Year's Day, there was some respite for the people in Delhi from the cold wave conditions with the minimum temperature being recorded at 7 degrees Celsius against 3.8 degrees Celsius the previous night. Northern states of India continues to reel under the cold wave with minimum temperatures plummeting to single digit in several regions. A thick blanket of fog has enveloped Delhi and its surrounding regions resulting in poor visibility on Tuesday.As Delhi battles with cold wave, the overall air quality index (AQI) dropped to 430 on Tuesday, which falls under the 'severe' category.At Dhirpur, the AQI was 724 at 8:30 am, while in Mathura Road area it dipped to 'hazardous' category at 484.
