Slight respite from cold in Kashmir

People in Kashmir had some respite from the cold in Kashmir, but the minimum temperature across the Valley stayed several degrees below the freezing point, a Meteorological (MeT) official said Wednesday. The night temperature also improved slightly in Kargil town in Ladakh region which experienced the coldest night of the season Tuesday. The official said the mercury in Kargil town settled at a low of minus 14.9 degrees Celsius last night up nearly one degrees from minus 15.8 degrees Celsius the previous night. The nearby Leh town saw a massive rise in the night temperature as the mercury rose from minus 15.1 degrees Celsius previous night to minus 6.0 degrees Celsius, the official said. Delhi recorded season's coldest day on Tuesday with the minimum temperature plunging to 5.1 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average. The maximum temperature was recorded at 22.3 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year, a MeT department official said. Humidity levels oscillated between 97 and 45 per cent. The Met office has forecast clear skies for Wednesday along with mist and shallow fog in the morning. "Clear skies with mist and shallow fog in the morning followed by haze and smoke thereafter. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover at 22 and 5 degrees Celsius, respectively," the weatherman said. Light rains over eastern UP, Muzaffarnagar coldest

Very light rain was recorded at isolated places over eastern Uttar Pradesh Tuesday, while weather remained dry over the western region of the state, the Met department said. North Maharashtra shivered as minimum temperatures dipped across the region with Dhule city being the coldest at 6.8 degree Celsius, officials said Tuesday. Nashik, the largest city in the region comprising five districts, recorded a temperature at 8.5 degree Celsius in the last 24 hours ending Monday evening. Cyclone Phethai has weakened into a well-marked low pressure as it moved in a north-easterly direction, the Meteorological Department said Tuesday while forecasting more rain till Wednesday morning in West Bengal. Intermittent rain and chilly wind continued through the night in most places of West Bengal, causing hardship to school children and office-goers in the morning.
