Minimum temp settles at 8.6 deg C, lowest of the season so far

It was a cold day in the national capital with the minimum temperature plunging to 8.6 degrees Celsius, the lowest of the season so far. The maximum temperature was recorded at 27.4 degrees Celsius, two notches above the normal, said a Meteorological (MeT) department official. The humidity oscillated between 95 and 34 per cent. The Met office has forecast overcast skies along with the possibility of shallow fog in the morning for Tuesday. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 27 and 9 degrees respectively," the weatherman said. On Sunday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 28.1 degrees Celsius, while the minimum settled at 9 degrees Celsius.

Mercury continues downward spiral in Kashmir Valley

The minimum temperature settled several degrees below the freezing point at most places in the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region on Monday even as the summer capital Srinagar experienced the coldest night of the season so far. Srinagar recorded a minimum of minus 2.8 degrees Celsius last night, an official of the Meteorological Department here said. He said the city experienced the coldest night of this winter so far. The night temperature dropped in the city from the previous night's minus 2.4 degrees Celsius owing to a clear sky. The official said other places across the valley and Ladakh region also experienced sub-zero night temperature on Sunday night. He said the Pahalgam health resort, which serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, registered a low of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius and was the coldest recorded place in the valley. The famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a minimum of minus 4 degrees Celsius down from minus 3.4

Snowfall likely in higher reaches of HP on Thursday

The higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh are likely to receive snowfall on Thursday, the meteorological centre here predicted. Light snowfall may occur over high reaches under the influence of a feeble western disturbance, MeT centre director Manmohan Singh said on Sunday. Currently dry northwesterly winds are prevailing over northwest India at lower and upper levels of the atmosphere, so no rain or snow is expected over Himachal Pradesh till Wednesday, he added. Singh said a second western disturbance may affect the western Himalayan region from December 8 and may cause light precipitation at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh till December 10. Light to moderate rain may occur at a few places over the state on December 11 under the influence a third western disturbance, he said.

Low pressure area likely to bring heavy rain in south TN

A low pressure area hovering close to south Tamil Nadu is likely to cause heavy rainfall at isolated places in southern districts of the state in the next 24 hours, the Regional Meterological Centre said Thursday. According to a weather bulletin, southern Tamil Nadu, delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam, besides Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Karaikal and Puducherry are likely to receive heavy rain. The delta districts, especially Nagappatinam, suffered heavy damage to crops and property when cyclone Gaja crossed the Tamil Nadu coast between Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam on November 16. It claimed 63 lives and left behind a trail of destruction. Mercury dips to 7.8 degree C in Odisha's Phulbani

With a cold wave-like condition sweeping across Odisha, the night temperature in many parts of the state will fall by two to three degree Celsius in the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Tuesday. The mercury dipped to below 15 degrees Celsius in 14 places in the state, with Phulbani in Kandhamal recording 7.8 degree Celsius, the lowest in the state this year, it said. State capital Bhubaneswar recorded a temperature of 13.6 degrees Celsius, it said. Minimum temperatures observed no large changes across the state. They were normal over coastal Odisha and below normal over the interiors, the IMD said. The highest maximum temperature of 32.2 degree Celsius was recorded at Talcher. While shallow fog has occurred at isolated places over the districts of Malkangiri of south interior Odisha, weather has been dry in most parts of the state, it said. It was a pleasant morning in the national capital on Tuesday as the minimum temperature settled at 11 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season's average, the Met office said. "The minimum temperature was recorded at 8.30 am at 11 degrees Celsius. The humidity was recorded at 90 per cent," an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.
