The meteorological department on Friday warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the Gangetic West Bengal till Saturday as the cyclonic storm 'Titli', which has weakened into a deep depression, moved towards northeast. The storm system is very likely to further lose steam and turn into a depression as it moves through Odisha and enter the Gangetic West Bengal after recurving northeastwards following landfall at Gopalpur in Ganjam district of Odisha, the weatherman said. It is, however, likely to cause heavy to very heavy rain in the Gangetic West Bengal, with North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, East Burdwan, Howrah and Hooghly districts to be affected the most. Heavy rain is likely in Kolkata, Bankura, Purulia, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Malda, North and South Dinajpur districts till Saturday. The Regional Meteorological Department here on Wednesday warned of intense spells of thundershower accompanied by gusty wind in six south Bengal districts for the next four days, triggered by a cyclonic storm even as brief rain played spoilsport amid heightened Durga Puja preparations across the state.
Punjab and Haryana, known as the grain bowl states of India, received close to normal monsoon rains this year, a meteorological department official said here on Wednesday. The south-west monsoon, which has withdrawn from the two states, including Chandigarh, on October 1, had turned quite active in the final phase and both the states received heavy rainfall between September 22 and 24, the official said. In the last three year, both Punjab and Haryana had witnessed monsoon rain deficit in the range of25-30 per cent. But this year, overall the two states received good rains, though some districts faced deficit. During the June 1-September 30 period, seven per cent excess rainfall lashed Punjab, which received 527.4 mm rains as against normal of 491.5 mm, the weather department official told PTI. Favourable conditions for onset of the North East monsoon in Tamil Nadu have receded with the movement of a cyclonic storm to the Oman coast and a depression in the Bay of Bengal heading towards Odisha, the weather office here said Monday. Speaking to reporters, Chennai Deputy Director General of Meteorology, S Balachandran said the state is also likely to receive lesser rains in the coming days. He said this was due to the northward movement of cyclone Luban in the Arabian sea to the Oman coast and a depression in the Bay of Bengal that is likely to develop into a cyclone while moving towards Odisha. Preparations are on at full swing for the four-day Durga Puja festival which will start from October 16. Under the influence of a depression over the eastcentral Bay of Bengal, squally weather along with rough to very rough seas is likely to prevail along and off West Bengal and Odisha coast, the IMD forecast said. A well-marked low pressure has formed in the Bay of Bengal and is expected to intensify into a depression in the next 36 hours, the Regional Meteorological Department said on Sunday. The weather office has cautioned fishermen against venturing out to the South and Central areas of Bay of Bengal till October 9. "A new low pressure has formed North of the Andaman (and Nicobar Islands) and South east of the Bay of Bengal.
