Cyclonic winds in Bay of Bengal delay withdrawal of SW monsoon

Cyclonic circulations in the Bay of Bengal have delayed the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon this year, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said here Tuesday. The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon is now expected to begin from September 29, a delay of four days compared to the last year. "The southwest monsoon was excepted to show indicators of its withdrawal in the last week (September 16-22) but cyclonic circulations in the Bay of Bengal delayed its movement," the official said. In IMD parlance, a cyclonic circulation is the atmospheric wind flow in upper levels associated with any low pressure system. The wind flow is counter clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. Going by the dry air and clear skies, the monsoon withdrawal is expected to start from Saturday (Sept 29), he said. "The similar indicators were shown on September 25 last year. This year, there is a delay of four days," according to the ...

Rains will be here for some more days

The monsoon rains in India are here for at least one more week and will start withdrawing from Saturday onwards.According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) the withdrawal of southwest monsoon is likely to commence from western parts of Rajasthan around 29th September. IMD had earlier predicted that the withdrawal could begin after 17 September. However, the Met Department said on Monday that a change in the wind pattern over west Rajasthan has caused the deferment."Prevalence of dry weather is likely over west Rajasthan from tomorrow. Reduction in the moisture associated with the monsoon flow and a change over in the low-level wind pattern is also likely over this region from 27th September. These are indicative of likely commencement of withdrawal of southwest monsoon from western parts of Rajasthan around 29 September," IMD said.It added that scattered to fairly widespread rainfall is likely over southern parts of peninsular India, along with the east coast and northeast ...

Jammu-Srinagar national highway closed after landslide in Ramban district

The Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Ramban district was closed Sunday following a landslide triggered by heavy rains in the Jammu region, officials said. Several parts of the regions have been receiving heavy rainfall since the early hours of Sunday, with many high-altitude areas witnessing their first snowfall of the season. Hundreds of vehicles were left stranded on the 270-km on the all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, they said. Arctic observations may help predict tropical cyclones

Weather observations in the Arctic can help track tropical and mid-latitude cyclones more accurately, improving the forecast of extreme climate events, scientists say. Currently, meteorological observations are conducted by radiosonde, a weather instrument that records meteorological data, typically released into the atmosphere with a weather balloon. However, due to hostile conditions experienced in the Arctic and the limited reach of the low pressure system, the number and frequency of these observations are limited. Consequently, there are gaps in the data that result in weather forecasts being less accurate than what they could and should be, potentially putting peoples' lives at risk. "Extreme weather events have been frequently observed in all seasons all over the world," said Kazutoshi Sato, an assistant professor at the Kitami Institute of Technology in the US. "Hurricanes and typhoons are one of the most influential phenomena for human life. Precise weather forecast is ...

Arctic observations may help in predicting tropical cyclones

Researchers have found that additional weather observations in the Arctic can help predict the track and intensity of tropical and mid-latitude cyclones more accurately, improving weather forecasting of extreme weather events.Upper-level observations such as radiosondes in the Arctic can help to forecast mid-latitude extreme events. Impacts of the Arctic observations can transfer through the tropospheric polar vortex, which is massive low-pressure air mass over the Arctic or Antarctic regions at about 10-km altitude. The tropospheric polar vortex, sometimes, extends toward mid-latitudes accompanied with the meandering of mid-latitude westerly jets. This extension can occur even in summer, that is, in August-September, where the meandering and extension were relatively active among the recent years. Thus, the impacts of the Arctic radiosonde observations could influence the mid-latitude extremes, the courses of three tropical cyclones approaching to Japan or Northern U.S. and Greenland,
