Guj: Kutch declared scarcity hit district due to poor monsoon

Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani Thursday declared Kutch as 'scarcity hit district' after it received just 26.51 per cent rains this monsoon. Besides Kutch district, tehsils which have received less than 125 mm of rainfall have also been declared scarcity hit with effect from October 1, a state government release said. "We held an extensive review and it has been decided that Kutch district, which has received only 26.51 per cent rains this monsoon, should be declared scarcity hit from October 1," Rupani told reporters after chairing a meeting to review the state's water situation. He added that the district would get subsidies as per government rules and norms. "We have also decided to declare all other tehsils of the state, where rainfall is less than 125 mm this monsoon, as scarcity hit," Rupani said, without giving number of such tehsils. Mainly clear skies in Delhi, MeT dept predicts light rains for Friday

Mainly clear skies prevailed in the national capital with the maximum temperature settling at 35.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday. The minimum temperature was recorded at 24 degrees Celsius, a notch below the normal, said a MeT Department official. The humidity oscillated between 87 and 37 per cent. The weatherman has forecast overcast skies along with the possibility of light rains and thundershowers towards Friday evening and night. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 34 and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively," the weatherman said. On Wednesday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 35 and 23 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Cyclone to hit Odisha and AP coast tonight: IMD

A cyclone will hit the coasts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh on late Thursday night, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. A deep depression is moving at a speed of about 12 kmph and is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours, the cyclone warning division of IMD said in the evening on Thursday. The depression, which was initially over west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas, moved westward and intensified into a deep depression, IMD said in a bulletin, adding that the depression lay centred at about 300 km east-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha. "It (the depression) is very likely to move west-northwestwards. It will cross south Odisha north Andhra Pradesh coasts between Kalingapatnam and Puri (Odisha) close to Gopalpur around midnight as a cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 60 kmph to 70 kmph, gusting to 80 kmph," Mritunjay Mohapatra, Additional Director General of the IMD, said. Heavy rainfall in HP in next 4 days

Himachal Pradesh may experience heavy rainfall in the next four days from September 21 to 24, the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, has predicted. The weather department has issued warning of heavy rain in the entire Himachal Pradesh in general and in Shimla, Kangra, Mandi and Chamba in particular from Friday to Tuesday, the Met centre director Manmohan Singh said. Meanwhile, no rainfall occurred in the state in the last 24 hours. However, Keylong remained the coldest place in the state with lowest temperature recorded at 6 degree Celsius here, he added. Una was recorded as the hottest place in the state with 35.2 degree Celsius.

Hot, humid day in Delhi; max temp at 25 deg C

It was a hot and humid day in the national capital with the mercury settling at two notches above the normal level. The maximum temperature settled at 35 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature was recorded at 23 degrees Celsius, the meteorological department said. Humidity levels oscillated between 37 and 88 per cent. The weatherman has predicted a clear sky for Thursday morning. "The skies will remain clear and the maximum temperature is expected to settle at 35 degrees Celsius," the official said. On Tuesday, the maximum temperature at 8.30 am was 35.2 degrees Celsius, two notches above the normal while the minimum temperature was 25.5 degrees Celsius.

Cyclonic circulations in Arabian Sea cause rain in Mumbai

Cyclonic circulations in the Arabian Sea near the Gujarat coast caused rain in Mumbai and its neighbouring districts in Maharashtra Wednesday morning, a MeT official said. The showers brought down temperatures in the megapolis and its surrounding areas which were witnessing a dry spell. Light to moderate rain occurred in Mumbai and its adjoining areas in the morning. "The cyclonic circulations formed over the Gujarat coast have brought lot of moisture, leading to cloud formation over most parts of Maharashtra," India Meteorological Department's (IMD) senior director Shubhangi Bhute told PTI. Due to this, several parts of the state, including Mumbai, are expected to receive medium intensity rains, she said, adding that moderate showers are also likely to occur in the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions in the next two days. Low pressure area formed, heavy rain likely in south Bengal

The Met department on Tuesday predicted heavy rain in south Bengal from Wednesday night owing to formation of a low pressure area over eastcentral Bay of Bengal. The low pressure is likely to become more marked and concentrate into a depression by Wednesday night, the weatherman said. The system is likely to move west-northwestwards towards north Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coasts during the period, the Met said. Rainfall in South Bengal may commence from Wednesday night and may continue till Saturday. Heavy rainfall is likely from Thursday in the districts of North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Howrah and Hooghly. All the districts of south Bengal are likely to experience heavy rain owing to the depression on Friday, the Met said. HRTC buses stop plying on Leh-Delhi route due to cold

The Himachal Roadways Transport Corporation (HRTC) has stopped plying its buses between Leh and Delhi as this route has been officially closed for winter season, an HRTC official said Sunday. The route was closed on Saturday. The 1,272-km-long highway is officially closed every year on September 15 as the roads freeze due to extreme cold at Baralacha La and Taglang La passes, HRTC regional manager Mangal Chand Manepa said The buses can not ply on those roads as they become un-passable because of piles of unmelted snow, he said. The route remains closed for over eight months and is normally reopened from June 1 after observing the weather, the officer added.

Higher reaches in Kashmir valley witness season's first snowfall

Some parts in the higher reaches of Kashmir received the season's first snowfall Saturday, while the plains were lashed by intermittent rains. There are reports of light snowfall in some areas, including Zojila Pass on the Srinagar-Leh Highway, an official of the MeT Department said. He said other parts of the valley were lashed by intermittent rains since Friday. The snowfall and the rains have brought down the temperature which was otherwise slightly above the normal for this time of the season. The day temperature in Srinagar hovered around 31 degrees Celsius for the past few weeks which was three degrees above the normal, but due to the recent snowfall and rains, the city registered a maximum temperature of 20.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday. The MeT Department has forecast isolated rainfall in the valley on Sunday.

Light to moderate rain/thundershowers occurred at isolated places in eastern Uttar Pradesh, while weather was dry in western part of the state, the local MeT office said. Maharajganj recorded 6 cm rainfall Friday while Bansi (3 cm) and Pharenda (2 cm), it said. Temperatures were above normal during the daytime in Gorakhpur, Varanasi and Allahabad divisions while they were normal in the remaining divisions of the state. With a maximum of 35.3 degrees Celsisus, Allahabad recorded as the hottest place in the state, the weather office said. The weather is most likely to remain dry in the state on September 17 and September 18, it forecast.

Light to moderate rains at isolated places in UP

Light to moderate rains and thundershowers occurred at isolated places over eastern Uttar Pradesh and at a few places over western UP, the MeT Department said Wednesday. Kannauj recorded 15 cm of rainfall followed by 9 cm in Gautam Buddh Nagar, 6 cm in Bijnor, 5 cm in Hapur, 4 cm in Puranpur, 3 cm each in Thakurdwara and Bareilly and 2 cm in Rampur, it said. On Tuesday, day temperatures were below normal in Kanpur and Jhansi divisions, and above normal in Moradabad division. Najibabad was recorded as the hottest place in the state with a maximum temperature of 34.6 degrees Celsius. Rains or thundershowers are very likely at isolated places over eastern UP on September 14, according to the weather office. The weather is most likely to remain dry in the state on September 15.

Deficit rain in 27 blocks despite heavy precipitation in

As many as 27 of Odisha's 314 blocks have received deficit rainfall during this monsoon even as the state's average rain comes to a surplus of 16.8 per cent, officials said Tuesday. Of the 27 blocks, four - three in Bolangir district and one in Koraput district - have recorded severely deficit rainfall, officials at the Special Relief Commissioner's (SRC) office here said. The lowest rain - a deficit rain of 47.8 per cent - was received by Belpada block in Bolangir. The 23 other blocks which recorded deficit rainfall are in Angul (3 blocks), Sundergarhh (5), Mayurbhanj (4), two each blocks in Bolangir and Bargarah, one block each in Balasore, Cuttack, Keonjhar, Koraput, Nawrangpur, Nayagarh and Sambalpur, the officials said. The cumulative average rainfall of the state from June 1 till September 11 comes to a surplus of 16.8 per cent over the long term average rainfall, they said.
