Monsoon to withdraw from HP during last week of Sep: MeT Dept

Monsoon will withdraw from Himachal Pradesh during the last week of this month, the Meteorological (MeT) Department here said. However, there will be a significant decrease in precipitation after a couple of days, MeT department director Manmohan Singh said. Light to moderate rainfall is likely at scattered places in the next two days, he said. Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall also occurred at several places in the state in 24 hours. The highest 34.1 millimetres rain was recorded at Jubbarhatti, followed by Shimla (26.6 mm), Sundernagar (16.6 mm) and Manali (12.2 mm) in during 24 hours. Meanwhile, the highest 32.8 degrees Celsius temperature was recorded in Una, whereas the lowest 10.1 degrees Celsius temperature was recorded in Keylong, Singh added.

Meghalaya Assembly autumn session to start from September 21

The autumn session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will commence from September 21, an official said on Monday. "The Autumn Session will commence from September 21 and extend till September 27," Assembly Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons said. He said government business has been allotted for September 21, 25 and 27, while private members' business has been slated for September 24 and 26, respectively.

Monsoon below normal for third straight month in August: IMD data

The countrywide monsoon saw the highest rain deficiency of the season in August -- ironically the month when a large part of Kerala was submerged and many other states received "excess" rainfall, as per the official IMD data. In the third consecutive month of rainfall deficiency, August recorded 92 per cent of rainfall of the Long Period Average (LPA) after 95 per cent in June and 94 per cent in July, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) data showed. The IMD officials blamed the low nationwide figures for monsoon rains largely on deficient rainfall in east and northeast India. Officially, the Southwest Monsoon season runs from June to September. From September 15, it usually starts withdrawing from Rajasthan and ends gradually. Incidentally, it was the month of August when Kerala saw an unprecedent rainfall activity submerging several parts of the state, resulting in a major crisis situation. Rains continued to lash parts of Rajasthan where Pisangan in Ajmer recorded 12 cm rainfall followed by Mangrol in Baran which recorded 11 cm. Bakani in Jhalawar registered 10 cm while Degod in Kota and Bijoliya in Bhilwara recorded 10 and 9 cm rains respectively till Sunday morning while many other places recorded below 9 cm rains. Jaipur and Ajmer received 0.3 and 0.2 mm rains till Sunday evening since morning, according to the Meteorological (MeT) department. The department has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places in eastern parts of the state.

Light to moderate rainfall lashed parts of Punjab and Haryana Sunday, leading to a dip in mercury at many places. Chandigarh was lashed by rains during late afternoon hours. The maximum temperature here settled at 33 degree Celsius, which was within the normal limit as per the MeT department report. Amritsar, which was also lashed by rains, recorded a high in temperature of 33.2 degree Celsius, one notch below normal limits. Ludhiana and Patiala recorded respective maximum temperatures of 33.7 degree Celsius and 34.1 degree Celsius. Hisar, which received light rain, recorded a high of 33 degree Celsius, down from the normal limits. Heavy rains lashed different parts of the city Saturday as the minimum temperature dipped to 25 degrees Celsius, according to the MeT Department here. The downpour brought respite from the humidity as strong winds swept through the city. The minimum temperature was recorded at 25 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average, and the maximum temperature was recorded at 34 degrees Celsius during the day. Naturopath held for spreading false info on medicines to treat

A naturopath was arrested Saturday for allegedly spreading false information through the social media about medicines given by the government to people affected by leptospirosis following the heavy rains last month in Kerala. Jacob Vadakkanchery was arrested by the state CB-CID after a probe was carried out on a directive received by the state police chief from Health Minister K K Shailaja Teacher, police said. They said that Jacob, through his social media posts, questioned the authenticity of themedicines given by the government to prevent leptospirosis (rat fever). Police had earlier warned him against carrying out a false propaganda to create panic among people. The minister had earlier this week asked the Director General of Police Lokanath Behera to initiate action against Vadakkanchery for spreading misleading information on rat fever. Rain subsides in Odisha, Met dept warns of fresh showers

Rain subsided Friday after crippling life for three days in parts of Odisha even as the Met department warned of more showers in the next 24 hours. Torrential downpour was likely in parts of Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Nuapada, Kalahandi and Koraput on Saturday, while sporadic rain could be expected across the state till Sunday, an official at Met Centre here said. The districts of Sundargarh, Kendrapara, Jajpur and Jagatsinghpur faced severe water-logging issues as rain pounded parts of the state in the past three days, he said. Heavy rains lashed parts of the national capital Friday, causing traffic congestion at major intersections across the city and flight diversions from the IGI airport. The downpour brought respite from the humidity, while causing waterlogging in many areas. Traffic was affected on the Wazirabad Road, the Bhajan Pura Main Road and Khajuri Chowk in northeast Delhi. Other routes affected due to waterlogging were between Old Gurugram Road towards Rao Mata Din Marg Crossing and Fun N Food Village in southwest Delhi, and Rajapuri Chowk and Palam Flyover in west Delhi. Incessant rain cripples life in Odisha

Incessant rains crippled life in several parts of Odisha Thursday as the depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression, raising the likelihood of more downpour till Friday, officials said. Low-lying areas in several districts, including Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Khordha were inundated as heavy rain pounded many parts of the state since Tuesday, they said. The maximum temperatures hovered above normal levels in most parts of Punjab and Haryana Thursday. UT Chandigarh, the joint capital of both states, registered its maximum temperature at 35.2 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal limits, according to the MeT Department here. Among other places in Haryana, Ambala, Hisar, Bhiwani and Karnal recorded maximum temperatures at 33.9, 37.3, 34.6 and 34.4 degrees Celsius, respectively. In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a high of 36.1 degrees Celsius while Ludhiana and Patiala recorded their maximum temperatures at 35.2 and 35.6 degrees Celsius, respectively. 9 die in rain-related incidents in UP

At least nine rain-related deaths were reported from different parts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, an official said. With this, the total number of rain-related deaths in the state since September 1 has touched 58. In a statement issued here, the UP relief commissioner said on Wednesday, three rain-related deaths were reported from Faizabad while two lives were lost in Unnao. One person died each in Auraiyya, Hardoi, Meerut and Etah. On September 4, as many as nine people died in the state. This includes two in Faizabad and one each in Etah, Auraiyya, Sultanpur, Jaunpur, Hathras, Rae Bareli and Ghaziabad. Similarly on September 3, 14 lives were lost in the state. Gordon makes landfall near Alabama-Mississippi border

Thousands of people were without power as Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall late Tuesday just west of the Alabama-Mississippi border. The National Hurricane center said Gordon struck about 10 p.m. and the storm is forecast to quickly weaken as it moves inland across Mississippi, Louisiana and into Arkansas through Thursday.
