Women's empowerment fuels growth, need to create level-playing field: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the economic empowerment of women fuels growth and the most effective way to empower women is through a "women-led development approach." "When women prosper, the world prospers," Modi said while virtually addressing the 'Ministerial Conference on Women's Empowerment' organised at the Mahatma Mandir in Gujarat capital Gandhinagar as part of India's G20 Presidency. He stressed on the need to create a level-playing field for women entrepreneurs in the current scenario. "Our goal should be to create a level-playing platform where women achievers become the norm. We must work to remove barriers which restrict their access to markets, global value chain and affordable finance," the PM said. "The economic empowerment of women fuels growth. Their access to education drives global progress. Their leadership fosters inclusivity and their voices inspire a positive change," he said. To emphasise his point, the PM said "Mahatma Gandhi's famous ..

Women needed in boardrooms, needs mindset change: Arundhati Bhattacharya

The representation of women in corporate boardrooms needs to be "far more", and it will involve a change of mindsets, determined action and focus, Arundhati Bhattacharya, the top boss of Salesforce India and former Chairperson of SBI has said. Bhattacharya smashed the glass ceiling in 2013 when she became the first woman to lead State Bank of India (SBI) in the bank's over 200-year history. She retired from SBI in 2017 and went on to reinvent herself with a brand new career innings at the helm of cloud-based service provider Salesforce India in 2020, as Chairperson and CEO. Speaking with PTI, she said Indian businesses need to see digital transformation as a "must have" and not merely as something good to have. Organisations that have inefficient processes, data residing in silos and manual processes, or skill gaps will fall behind, unless they adopt tech and digital, she advocated. Every single sector - be it healthcare, automotive or manufacturing presents an opportunity for ...

Alliance launched to boost number of women in STEM, workforce in India

A top India-centric American business advocacy group, in collaboration with various US government agencies and a prestigious university, has announced an alliance to increase the number of women in STEM education and the workforce in India. The launch of the US-India Alliance for Women's Economic Empowerment STEM Collaborative was announced by Mukesh Aghi, president and CEO of the US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum during the US-India Alliance Shatter Summit. India and the US tech synergy is well evinced in India being an IT powerhouse and the US having the most robust tech economy. However, there is still a lacuna in the number of male and female STEM graduates, Aghi said. For India to unleash its full potential, there needs to be a concerted effort to get more young girls and women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths), he said. The US-India Alliance for Women's Economic Empowerment is a public-private partnership between the State Department, USAID, USISPF,

Fewer women were employed in 2021 than in 2020 due to Covid : Oxfam report

Fewer women were employed in 2021 than in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic and governments worldwide are putting women in danger of unprecedented poverty and overwork to tame inflation and help their economies recover, a new report has claimed. The new Oxfam report -- 'The Assault of Austerity' -- stated that the road to post-pandemic recovery is being built upon the lives, sweated labour and security of women and girls, it said. The report said many governments planned cuts to public services like water which meant that women and girls around the world would continue to spend at least 200 million hours. The report said governments around the world are putting women and girls in danger of unprecedented new levels of poverty, peril, overwork and premature death as a result of near-universal "slash-and-burn" efforts to recover their economies from the pandemic and tame inflation.
