CPI-M candidate and yesteryear athlete Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, who skipped the Sydney Olympics due to an injury to her achilles tendon, hopes that disunity within the Congress-Trinamool Congress combine will prove to be their achilles heel.
Also, the presence of BJP state unit president Satya Brata Mookherjee in the fray in Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat may eat into the Congress-TC votes when the constituency goes to polls on May 7, political observers feel.
Sikdar, the middle-distance runner who won two gold medals and a silver in the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games, is pitted against Trinamool Congress' Bengali actor Tapas Paul.
She is banking on her party's well-structured machinery and disunity within the grassroot level workers of the Congress and the Trinamool Congress alliance to grab the seat.
"The allegations of non-performance are made by the media. Left Front government has been working for the rural people and will work for them," Sikdar, a Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardee, said.
Moreover, the fighting within the opposition could also brighten her winning prospects.State Congress president and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee had instructed Congress leaders to work in support of Paul, the alliance candidate, but PCC general secretary Sankar Singh is reluctant to do so.
