	Nelson Mandela (full name Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela) was a black nationalist and South Africa&rsquo;s first democratically elected black president. In the early 1990s, he negotiated with South African President F W de Clerk to end the system of racial segregation and apartheid and bring about a democratic rule. Both the presidents were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1993. He served as the president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.</div>

	From 1964 to 1982, Mandela was incarcerated by the South African state on grounds of treason. Even while being incarcerated, he had a wide support from within the black community. He reportedly rejected three conditional offers for his release during this time.</div>
