FIFA WC 2006: Italy lifts the 'Cup of Joy'

| Italy beat France 5-3 in the final match of the 18th FIFA World Cup 2006 in the penalty shoot-out. The match was played at Berlin Olympic stadium on Sunday. It was the 4th World Cup title for Italy. The match remained tied 1-1 after extra time. It was just the second time when a World Cup final match was decided on penalty kicks. The first time was in 1994, when Brazil beat Italy. Zidane's career ended as he was shown a red card in extra time. The first goal scored by Zinedine Zidane on a penalty kick in the 7th minute. Italy's Marcelo Materazzi scored the goal by powerful header after 19th minutes to level the score 1-1. Italy won the first two World Cup matches with France, 3-1 in 1938 and 2-1 in 1978. France won 2-0 in 1986, then took a penalty-kick shootout 4-3 after a 0-0 tie in 1998. |
