Sitting inside the office of Alliance Merchandising in Okhla, one can’t help but notice the works of art scattered across the swanky two-storey building. Sunil Sethi, the managing director and founder, gives me a guided tour of his office, “a source of pride and joy”. At the entrance is a colourful auto-rickshaw designed by Nitin Bal Chauhan, bearing the names of Indian designers such as Manish Arora, Raghavendra Rathore, Tarun Tahiliani and Rohit Bal. “This is FDCI di gaddi (car),” says Sethi. The conversation steers to his more high-profile role as president of the Fashion and Design Council of India, a not-for-profit organisation that serves as the apex body of fashion and design in the country, with over 350 members.
