The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday approved the proposal of Bangalore-based Base Corporation to set up a greenfield battery manufacturing facility in Krishnagiri district of the state. The proposed facility will involve an investment of around Rs 432 crore, said a senior company official.

The company has a manufacturing facility in Himachal Pradesh with a capacity of 45 million ampere-hours (AH).

“Our demand is 100 per cent more than our production capacity. Besides, we want to enter new areas like railways and telecom. To support these, we have decided to set up a new facility in Krishnagiri district,” Base marketing head Aditya Arora told Business Standard.

Base has acquired 150 acres of which 60 per cent space will be for green area and for zero discharge facilities. The initial capacity of the plant will be 100 million AH a month and the total capacity is 175 million AH.

The plant will cater to both domestic and international markets, said Arora. He said the company's turnover was around Rs 600 crore and the proposed facility would help them reach their target of Rs 2,000 crore in three years.

The manufacturing facility in Himachal makes lead-acid storage batteries and VRLA (valve-regulated lead-acid) batteries among others, according to the company's website.
