"The amount, which is about Rs 30 crore per year, will be used for sponsoring research leading to development of green and clean technologies." said R S Sharma, chairman and managing director, NTPC.
The research project will include development of coal gasification technology for commercial use, reducing cost of harnessing solar energy and improvement in efficiency of its power stations.
Sharma also added that from now on, the company will carry out annual audits and report the quantity of harmful green house gas emissions from its power plants regularly.
NTPC is the leading power generating company and consumes about 25 per cent of India's coal production.
