Fiscal deficit touches 97% of revised estimate till Feb

Till February 2012-13, deficit constituted 5.05% of GDP; Chidambaram had said deficit would be lower than estimates

For the first 11 months of the current financial year, the Centre's fiscal deficit touched 97.4% of revised estimate (RE) for 2012-13, official data showed today.

In absolute terms, the fiscal deficit stood at Rs 5.07 lakh crore against Rs 5.21 lakh crore estimated in the RE, the data provided by the Controller General of Accounts revealed.

The fiscal deficit had touched 94.6% of the RE in the corresponding period of 2011-12.

Till February 2012-13, the deficit constituted 5.05% of India's estimated GDP at little over Rs 100 lakh crore.

The budget estimated to bring down the deficit to 5.2% of GDP in 2012-13 against 5.7% in 2011-12. Finance Minister P Chidambaram had said when the final figures of the deficit comes, it would be lower than the RE.
