With three Ultra Mega Power Plants (UMPPs) proposed to be set up in the state, Orissa is poised to be the power hub of the country, supplying electricity to various parts of the nation, said Union power minister Sushilkumar Shinde.

The three UMPPs involve a total investment of Rs 60,000 crore and Orissa would draw 5300 MW as state share from these mega power stations.

Shinde addressed a public gathering at Phulpara near here on Saturday after laying the foundation stone of Rs 2300-crore 765/400 KV pooling station of central utility Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL).

The foundation stone of a similar pooling station was also laid by the minster in Sundergarh district. This station is also being set up at an estimated cost of Rs 2300 crore. These pooling stations will draw power from the upcoming independent power producers (IPPs) in the region and evacuate power to other grids of the nation.

In Angul, the station is being built over an area of 30 acres of both government and private land. More than 120 families of two villages have been affected for this transmission facility.
