Power overuse: UP demands action

Uttar Pradesh wants action against Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttaranchal for overdrawing power from the northern grid.

The state power corporation has written to the national transmission grid authorities pointing out that for the last few days, the grid frequency has been below 49 hz due to outages by central power plants and reduction in hydel power generation.

"On June 21, the average frequency was 48.95 hz and the same conditions are developing as there were in the month of April. It is being observed that some states like Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttaranchal are drawing beyond their schedule, most of the time," the letter states.

UP has also requested that power overuse by states be viewed in the context of their size and demands.

"Uttar Pradesh could not be compared with any state of the northern region. Comparisons could be made with states large in size like Maharashtra," the letter states.
