Retired Punjab teachers to stay for now

Press Trust Of India New Delhi/ Kharar
Punjab Governor S F Rodrigues has issued an ordinance that allows teachers of government schools in the state, who reach their retirement age in the middle of the academic year, to be re-employed in service till the session is over.

The move is to prevent any disruption of studies that follows when teachers retire in the middle of the session, Secretary of Department of Legal and Legislative Affairs Mohinder Pal said yesterday.

"Exercising the powers conferred on him under article 213 of the constitution of india, Governor S F Rodrigues has issued the Punjab school teachers' re-employment ordinance 2006, which will supercede anything contained in any law or service rules applicable to the state teachers," he said.

During the period of re-employment, the teachers will be paid salary equivalent to the difference between their last pay drawn and the pension admissible to them, the ordinance stated.
