Our Economy Bureau New Delhi
The government had identified 16 links for the river linking project, of which feasibility reports were ready for 14, said Water Resources Minister P R Dasmunsi today.

"The focus is on rivers in peninsular India. The rivers in the northern region are not being linked," he told reporters during a press conference on the meeting of the 36th Indo-Bangladesh Joint River Commission.

On the Ken-Betwa link, a memorandum of understanding between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh was signed a couple of weeks ago and a detailed project report (DPR) was to be completed in 24 months, he said, adding that the issues of environment, submergence and flood water reservoir would be taken on board in the DPR itself.

The DPR required Rs 40 crore, of which, only Rs 6 crore had been provided for. he said, adding that the ministry was approaching the government for additional financing.

India and Bangladesh have agreed to review the outcome of the implementation of the Indo-Bangladesh river water treaty. The 36th Joint River Commission, which met in Bangladesh recently, has decided to meet again in the next 6-7 months. It has also been decided that ministers from both sides would meet as and when required.

The crucial issue of sharing of the waters of the Teesta river remained unresolved and was referred to a joint experts' committee which will report to the commission.

India has offered to provide further advance warning of floods.

Joint inspections will be held in areas where erosion works, minor irrigation and drinking water works have been stopped.
