Singapore eyes economic ties with North East

Singapore wants to strengthen ties with Assam and North East via trade and commerce, said the country’s foreign minister K Shanmugam.

Shanmugam said Singapore was willing to invest in the region and establish trade relation with India. He identified tea, tourism, hospitality, horticulture, IT, hydrocarbon as the potential sectors for investment in North East.

“I see great opportunity in the region particularly in sectors like hospitality, tourism, tea, IT etc. The region has potential to attract investment from investors of our country,” said Shanmugam.

He said the Asean nation had expertise in tourism and hospitality sectors and any investment from Singapore would also bring with it the country’s expertise.

 

The foreign minister of the island nation said Singapore is a highly market driven economy and would like to expand economic ties with other nations.

Shanmugam also met Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi and discussed investment plans in the state. Shanmugan, who also interacted with industry people from the region, asked them to take initiative to further the economic relation between the region and Singapore.

Shanmugam said the security situation in the region was improving and that would not act as any deterrent for investors of his country to come and invest in North East.
