The Chhattisgarh government's proposal to reorganise block headquarters in the state was likely to get delayed following the pending plan of reorganising the tehsil headquarters.

The state government had intended to decentralise the power centre and take governance to the people by carving out small administrative set up. In the process, the districts were reorganised and 9 new districts were made taking the total to 27.

A one-member committee headed by former chief secretary S K Misra was constituted for the reorganising the block headquarters.

The same committee had been asked to suggest the tehsil headquarters also.A top official in the state government said that the committee was supposed to submit its report by June.

The work could not be completed and the committee's term was extended till September.

The official said the possibility of committee submitting the report to the government was bleak.

Since the state was going to the polls in November-December this year, the election code of conduct would come into effect soon. This would put the proposal of reorganising the tehsil and blocks in the state on hold.

The official said the tehsil headquarters were supposed to be reorganised first as it would enable effective demarking of the small set up of block headquarters.

Since the project for the tehsil could not be completed, the matter of block headquarters had also been put on hold. The committee had completed the public hearings in the divisional headquarters.

The state has 148 tehsil and 149 block headquarters. Under the proposal, the number of tehsil and blocks had to be increased to 200.
