R Krishna Das Raipur
The dairy sector in Chhattisgarh may be in for better times, as the state-own milk federation is expanding its operations in the state otherwise known for its rich mineral resources.

The Chhattisgarh Dugdh Mahasangh (Milk Federation) had designed an action plan to enhance its production capacity and market share in the milk product. The opening of new societies for milk collection is high on the list with the authorities starting the process. A top federation official said in all 446 milk cooperative societies are operating in the state. We now plan to add another 186 societies across the state, the official said, adding that the survey work for the new societies had been completed and soon it would take shape. The new societies would power the milk federation to enhance collection of milk and subsequently the production. The federations production had already reached 50,000 litres per day. We would now increase the production to 70,000 litres per day, the official added. The collection of milk was just 24,570 litres in 2010-11.The federation has the capacity to produce 100,000 litres of milk per day. But the short market demand had confined the officials to think for a big deal.

The official said efforts were on to improve the marketing of the product. Besides new outlets, publicity of product was also on the card under the plan.
