In a bid to attract young voters, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today promised allowances for unemployed youth of the state in its election manifesto for the assembly elections.
As per the party’s poll agenda, jobless skilled and unskilled youths would be given Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 respectively as monthly allowance. The party also promised to raise the upper age limit for applying to government jobs from the present 35 years to 40 years, if it is voted to power.
“Its our responsibility to provide the people of Odisha an opportunity to become a partner in the growth of the state, if we come to power,” BJP general secretary Dharmendra Pradhan said.
The poll manifesto contained about 45 promises, including 35 schemes, with focus on youth and women empowerment.
The BJP government would set up fast track courts to hear cases on women atrocities, will appoint a women judge as head of Women Commission. Besides, a scheme named as ‘Kanyaratna’ would be launched to provide financial assistance to girl child from her birth till marriage, the manifesto said.
It promised to fill up vacancies from primary school to university level to ensure quality education. For students, the party promised interest-free education loans based on their financial condition and said, stipends for SC and ST students would be doubled.
Going a step further from the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD), which had announced to provide farm loan at 1 per cent interest rate, BJP said, the interest rate on farm loans would be zero for the first year, 1 per cent for the second year and 2 per cent for the third year and 3 per cent in the subsequent years. During natural calamities, there will be provision of loan waiver, it said.
The saffron party also promised to provide Rs 300 as bonus to the farmers over and above the minimum support price (MSP) of paddy, to double the coverage of irrigation in the state from the current 39 percent and said, farmers would be provided free electricity for irrigation, if its government is installed in the state.
The party also announced to set up a cold storage centre in every block of the state for preservation of agricultural produce and to prevent farmers from distress sale of their produce.
Apart from its promise to obtain special category status for Odisha from the Centre, BJP said, it would set up an Odia university and would make sure every public representative of the state had knowledge of Odia.
As the party is also banking upon slum dweller votes to win maximum seats in Lok Sabha and Assembly, it promised concrete houses for all families residing in slum area and said, homeless people would be provided land for houses. The BJD has also promised to convert all kacha houses to pucca houses in its manifesto.
Reacting to BJP manifesto, the state unit of Congress said, as there is very little chance of BJP coming to power in Odisha, its manifesto is nothing but a daydream. BJD said, the manifesto of the saffron party is far from reality.
