Mark Zuckerberg to testify to Congress as Libra concerns intensify

Facebook announced in June it's trying to create the new cryptocurrency using similar technology to that of Bitcoin, saying it would lower the cost of payments and money transfers

Facebook Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg will testify before a key congressional committee that deals with the finance industry later this month, the latest sign of rising opposition to the social media giant’s plans to create a cryptocurrency.
 

The social network’s top executive will appear before the House Financial Services Committee on Oct. 23, according to Maxine Waters, the panel’s Democratic chairwoman. He’ll be the sole witness at the hearing, which is advertised as an examination of Facebook’s broad impact on the financial services and housing industries, Waters said in a Wednesday statement.
