Gem, jewellery exports cross Rs 1 lakh cr

India’s gem and jewellery exports in Apr-Jan were up 14.30 per cent on year at Rs 1.07 lakh crore, according to provisional data by Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC).

However, gem and jewellery exports in the same period, in dollar terms, were up only 7.42 per cent on year at $22.54 billion, the council said.The data does not include figures from Vishakhapatnam SEZ, the council said.

Segment-wise exports
Exports of cut and polished diamonds have risen in the period under review 18.46 per cent on year to Rs 65,693 crore, GJEPC said.

Exports of gold jewellery from the domestic tariff area rose 0.49 per cent to Rs 7,958 crore, while from the special economic zones were up 11.28 per cent at Rs 28,513 crore, it said.

 

Total gold jewellery exports stood at Rs 36,471 crore, up 8.73 per cent on year, the data showed.

April-January exports of coloured gemstones rose 14.59 per cent on year to Rs 1,160 crore, the data showed. Exports of rough diamonds declined 6.95 per cent on year to Rs 2,790 crore, GJEPC said.

Imports up too
The data showed that in the April-January period, imports of rough diamonds rose 4.82 per cent on year at Rs 33,900 crore.

Imports of gold bar were up 21 per cent on year at Rs 21,329 crore in the same period, while cut & polished diamond imports rose 23 per cent on year at Rs 40,430 crore, the council said.

The data does not include imports made by MMTC Ltd, Corporation Bank, the council has clarified.
