India's sugar output up 19% on higher cane crushing

Maharashtra led the roost with 4.3 million tonnes of sugar output

BS REPORTER Mumbai

Sugar output in India jumped 19% this season upto January 15 on gradual increase in cane crushing.

Data compiled by the apex industry body, Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) showed India's sugar output at 10.3 million tonnes by January 15 as against 8.65 million tonnes produced by the same time last year.

Maharashtra led the roost with 4.3 million tonnes of sugar output so far this season as against 3.1 million tonnes, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 2.5 million tonnes versus 1.96 million tonnes.

Given that cane output estimated to decline to 342.79 million tonnes as per the first Advance Estimate for 2014-15 as compared to 350.02 million tonnes in the previous year (Fourth Advance Estimate), the crushing season is set to end early this year.
