American football star Aaron Hernandez has reportedly been charged with a double murder committed in 2012 while still facing a previous murder charge.

The former New England Patriots player was arrested last June for allegedly killing Odin Lloyd, a semi-professional player found near his home.

According to the BBC, prosecutors said that Hernandez drove up alongside the vehicle of two men, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, with whom he had a 'chance encounter' at a club earlier, in Boston, Massachusetts on 16 July 2012 and 'ambushed and executed' them.

Hernandez had allegedly told Lloyd, whose killing mirrors the details of Abreu's and Furtado's deaths, he was upset about an incident at a nightclub days before.

Police said that Abreu and Furtado were 'two young, innocent victims'.

Hernandez was dropped from the Patriots - and his 40 million-dollar contract - shortly after his arrest in June, the report added.
