Australians are the world's most frequent online shoppers at international retailers, a global survey has found.

The annual global survey of almost 30,000 consumers by the Boston Consulting Group found the shift towards online shopping came as more Australians chose to save rather than spend.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the survey found that about 46 percent of the respondents said they preferred to save rather than spend, a rise from 40 percent last year.

The survey found that 54 percent respondents said they were less inclined to buy new items, a rise from 49 percent last year.

The respondents said range, availability and price were the key factors in their decision to shop from overseas web retailers.
