Bangladesh's main opposition party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), held strike against the ruling Awami League government for obstructing a rally hosted by one of their party leaders.
BNP was not allowed to stage a rally in Gazipur earlier on December 27 as the ruling Awami League party had also called for a rally at the same venue.
"This strike has been called to protest against the undemocratic behaviour of the government. On December 27, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia held a rally in Gazipur which was obstructed. Therefore, this strike has been called to protest against it," said the Joint Secretary of BNP, Mohammad Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
The roads were empty while offices, schools and shops were closed in Dhaka.
BNP supporters held big banners and shouted slogans against the government while the strike turned violent as party supporters clashed with police, which led to the killing of one woman. Three police men were also injured.
BNP has been staging mass protests demanding fresh national elections in the country.
