The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and regional Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Monday criticised the Uttar Pradesh Government over sugarcane prices during a state assembly session.
The sugarcane prices have fallen drastically over the recent past due to which the cultivators have not been able to overcome their input cost and therefore bearing huge losses.
BJP leader Hukum Singh said: "Sugarcane farmers are committing suicide, wheat farmers are committing suicide and the Chief is just sitting back doing nothing about the issue."
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Swami Prasad Maurya: "The Samajwadi Party (SP) has given the Rs.889 crore amount to the sugar mill owners, instead it should have been given to the sugarcane cultivators to clear off their debts and their loss. By doing this the government has just shown its anti-farmer attitude and their support for the sugar manufacturers. Because of their inefficiency, two months - October and November - have passed, but still there has been no regulation on the sugar mill owners, which is really unfortunate."
Earlier in the day, the leaders of BJP and BSP voiced their concern by raising placards and demanding the prices of the sugar at Rs.350 per quintal and payment of Rs.2400 crore, which is due to the farmers.
The leaders also demanded immediate action from the state government in relation to the harassment of the paddy growers in Uttar Pradesh.
