A large number of Kannada writers, artists and academicians on Monday lauded the contribution of Prof. G Venkatasubbaiah, a Kannada lexicographer and litterateur, at a function here to mark his birth centenary.
The editor of Dehali Kannadiga, M.B. Samaga, who inaugurated the celebrations here, said Prof. Venkatasubbaiah regarded as the father of modern Kannada dictionary, compiled 10 dictionaries in the language and also edited over 25 books.
He further said that Venkatasubbaiah was the vice president of Lexicographical Association of India for 17 years. He was the president of Kannada Sahitya Parishad from 1964 to 1969. He also presided over the 77th All India Kannada Rajyotsava Award in 191, Nadoja Award of Hampi University in 2005 and Dr. KM Munshi Award in 2012.
Samaga further urged the Karnataka Government to establish an institution dedicated to continuous compilation of a Karnataka dictionary under the guidance of Venkatasubbaiah who is based in Bangalore. He also asked the Union Government to honour him with a Padma Bhushan Award.
