Islamic State (IS) fighters have killed at least 400 people, mostly women and children, in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, which they seized recently.

Reports said that streets were strewn with bodies as IS fighters slaughtered people and mutilated their bodies for co-operating with the government and not following the group's orders, reported The Mirror.

The latest massacre followed the killing of about 300 troops, just after Palmyra was captured by the terror group.

A black flag now flies over an ancient citadel in the city, which is home to the UNESCO world heritage site.
