The Republic of Ireland has voted overwhelmingly to endorse same sex marriages in a historic referendum.

With over 62 percent of the voters favouring legalisation of homosexual marriages, Ireland has become the first nation to hold a popular vote on the issue, reported the BBC.

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny hailed the decision by saying that it was a "big message" from a small country for "equality" to the world.

The referendum was held 22 years after homosexual acts were decriminalised in the country.
