Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen has slammed Australian carrier Qantas, describing them as 'muppets' after he was prevented from entering the airline's lounge for wearing flip flops.

The incident took place when he was travelling to Australia to play for the Melbourne Stars in the Twenty20 Big Bash league.

Pietersen, who was fumed over the incident, wrote on Twitter, "I suggest you tell Platinum, First Class fliers that they not allowed in your lounges with flip flops before they fly, @Qantas! Muppets!."

"And BTW, @Qantas! Thongs (flip flops) are an institution in this great country! GET A GRIP! Tired, jet lagged & just wanted to chill! #Muppets, "he added.

Reacting to Pietersen's comments, Qantas admitted that it might have caused disappointment for the maverick batsman, but insisted that the changes in the dress code were made earlier this year.

An airline spokesperson also expressed his views on the same, saying that it was necessary to remind people of the dress standards that are followed in the airlines.

Pietersen will play in the Big Bash League, starting from December 17.
