Manchester United have abandoned plans to sign Poland striker Robert Lewandowski after having been tracking him for 18 months and having an 18 million pound bid rejected when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge.

According to the Daily Star, Ferguson continued to monitor Lewandowski and considered a second bid in the summer.

However, new boss David Moyes has now decided to turn his back on the Borussia Dortmund star, the report said.

A club source said that other areas of the squad need strengthening and so the manager has turned his back on Lewandowski once and for all.

The source further said that Lewandowski has been a target but Moyes cannot see where he would fit into the team.
