Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that he will not allow the formation of a separate Palestinian state if he is reelected in Tuesday's vote, a report said.

He was attempting to amass support as polls showed his Likud party lagging behind the centre-left opposition alliance, the Zionist Union, reported the BBC.

Netanyahu argued that the creation of a separate state for Palestinians would open Israel to attacks by Islamists.

Referring to the left, he said, "Whoever ignores that is burying his head in the sand."

The Zionist Union has promised to repair relations with Palestinians and the international community.

Neither of the two sides is expected to win more than a quarter of the votes, the report said.
