The global market for personal computers (PCs) is expected to post its greatest yearly contraction on record in 2013, according to IDC.

Market researcher IDC recently projected that PC shipments will drop 10.1 percent this year, with another 3.8 percent decline expected for 2014, Cnet reports.

Although users' interest in PCs is said to have deteriorated as it continues to shift toward tablets and smartphones, analysts said that the chief concern for future PC demand is lack of reasons to replace an older system.

IDC research found that the PC still remains the primary computing device as they are used for more hours per day than tablets or phones, but its usage is still declining each year with more devices becoming available.
