Migrant workers, who are being forced to live in horrific and inhumane conditions as Qatar prepares for the 2022 World Cup with a 22 billion-pound construction operation, have said that their deaths are 'cheap' and that they are being treated like 'slaves'.
FIFA is under fresh pressure to take the tournament away from Qatar following multiple revelations of corruption, mass death and exploitation of workers, with campaigners fearing that almost 4,000 workers could be killed as they toil in sweltering heat without proper water for a measly pay.
According to the Daily Star, the labourers, most of whom are recruited from Nepal, are promised safe working conditions and decent pay to send home to their family, although the truth seems to be very different with a worker revealing that they are treated like slaves, instead of like normal human beings.
Stating that their deaths are 'cheap' for the organisers, the worker also said that they are trapped in Qatar and cannot leave for home as their passports are in the custody of their employers.
Last year, an investigation into the World Cup revealed that workers were dying at a rate of almost one a day, many of them young, healthy men and the report added that those who do not die are routinely denied their wages, have their passports and ID confiscated and are denied water even in the extreme desert heat.
