Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D Raja has said that the Rangrajan Committee is just making mockery of the peoples' poverty by declaring that an individual can have food for such a small amount.

Raja told ANI, "It is purely unscientific and unrealistic statement passed by the committee. They do not understand the feelings of poor people and are making mockery of their poverty."

A panel headed by former Economic Advisor to Prime Minister C.Rangarajan sets the poverty line at RS.32 per day in rural areas and Rs.47 in urban areas.

"Tendulkar committee report, Rangarajan committee report and other related committees have huge disconnect with reality. The government should not take it into consideration," Raja added.

As per the report submitted by Rangarajan to Minister of State, Statistics and Programme Implementation, Rao Inderjit Singh, it said the poverty stood at 38.2 per cent in 2009-10 and had slid to 29.5 per cent in 2011-12.
