'The Hobbit' takes top spot at weekend box office with $31.5m earnings

Film 'Anchorman 2' released on Wednesday took Friday earnings of 8.7 million dollars before being trampled by 'The Hobbit

The comedy sequel is looking at a three-day haul of 26 million dollars to the 'Hobbit's' 30 million dollars second frame, Fox News reported.

In its first five days, 'Anchorman 2' is projected to earn nearly 40 million dollars, right in the center of pre-weekend expectations.

On Friday, Warner Bros' 'The Hobbit' crossed both the 300 million dollars worldwide milestone and the 100 million dollars mark domestically.
