TN cabinet urges Centre to confer Bharat Ratna on Jayalaithaa

The Tamil Nadu cabinet under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister O. Paneerselvam passed a resolution on Saturday requesting the Centre to award late chief minister J. Jayalalithaa with Bharat Ratna.

Among other things, the Cabinet also declared that a memorial in the name of Jayalalithaa will be built at the cost of Rs.15 crore.

The government also decided to rename the MGR memorial as 'Bharat Ratna Dr.MGR and Jayalalithaa memorial'.

The state government further requested the Centre to install a full-sized bronze statue on the Parliament campus.

Jayalalithaa, 68, who was admitted to Apollo Hospitals under the complaints of dehydration on September 22, died on December 5 after suffering cardiac arrest.

 

Her body was buried beside her mentor and former chief minister M.G. Ramachandran at Marina Beach, M.G.R memorial.
