Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has reportedly closed down his Twitter account days after saying that he felt he had been made a scapegoat for his club's poor season.

The England international has been subjected to a constant torrent of abuse on the micro-blogging site this season, with his critics believing he does not come up to scratch as a United player.

According to Metro.co.uk, although Cleverley claimed that he has learned to take the criticism with 'a pinch of salt', it now appears the trolling has become too much for the former youth player, with the 'page does not exist' message replacing his Twitter profile page.

Cleverley is not the first United player to throw the towel in with Twitter, with Darron Gibson tweeting his last in similar circumstances in 2011, the report added.
