Uber has added a new SOS button, located in the top right of the screen, to enhance the safety of passengers in India where the car service is under increased scrutiny after an alleged rape of a female passenger by one of its drivers last year.

According to the Verge, the new feature is available as part of an in-app update that allows users to share details of their rides with up to five contacts.

The new SOS button also enables users to call the police in case of an emergence.

Another feature "Send Status" is an enhanced version of the ShareMyETA option that has been available for over a year.

Users can choose the details of their rides including driver's photo, license plate number, and live GPS tracking with five contacts.
