CPI Inflation spurts to 15-month high of 4.88% in November 2017

Cumulative CPI inflation flat lower at 3% in April-November 2017
The all-India general CPI inflation surged to 4.88% in November 2017 (new base 2012=100), compared with 3.58% in October 2017. The corresponding provisional inflation rate for rural area was 4.79% and urban area 4.90% in November 2017 as against 3.36% and 3.81% in October 2017. The core CPI inflation increased to 4.69% in November 2017 compared with 4.40% in October 2017. The cumulative CPI inflation was lower at 3.00% in April-November FY2018 compared with 5.03% in April-November FY2017.Among the CPI components, inflation of food and beverages accelerated to 4.41% in November 2017 from 2.26% in October 2017 mainly contributing to the increase in CPI inflation. Within the food items, the inflation increased for vegetables to 22.48%, fruits 6.19%, egg 7.95% and milk and products 4.52%. The inflation also moved up for sugar and confectionery to 7.80%, meat and fish to 3.27% and non-alcoholic beverages 2.46%. However, the inflation eased for cereals and products 3.27%, pulses and products to -23.53% and spices -2.08% in November 2017.
The inflation for housing increased to 7.36%, while that for miscellaneous items moved up to 3.63% in November 2017. Within the miscellaneous items, the inflation for health galloped to 4.59%, household goods and services 4.51% and education 4.44%, while it was flat for personal care and effects at 3.34% and recreation and amusement 3.95%. However, the inflation for Transport and communication declined to 2.07% in November 2017.
The inflation for clothing and footwear increased to 7.36%, while the CPI inflation of fuel and light also rose to 4.59% in November 2017.
